Embrace island living with a day trip to neighbouring Formentera. This tiny island – just a 30-minute ferry ride from Ibiza – is home to white beaches and an original hippie vibe, making it a popular place to escape from the crowds of the White Isle. Why it’s awesome: Playa d’en Bossa is the longest beach in Ibiza, stretching for some two kilometres (1.2 miles). The sandy strip is wide and the sparkling waters are shallow. Attracting many visitors keen to lap up the sun and vibe, there are also quieter parts where visitors can escape the crowds. Just a short distance from Ibiza Town, there are various activities available at the beach as well as a wide range of places to eat and drink. Facilities include bathrooms and showers. At night, there’s a pumping night scene.

Now, this place might not be completely quiet but it’s a world away from the nightclubs in San Antonio. The Old Town, or Dalt Vila, gives you an idea what Ibiza used to be like. We feasted on Turkish flatbreads with melted cheese and pistachio, plates of delicious beetroot carpaccio and homemade Rigatoni pasta with San Marzano tomatoes and parmesan cheese. Oh, and did we mention the best mango and passion fruit cheesecake ever? You can then spend the afternoon on the surprisingly desserted beach and enjoy drinks from the restaurant until the sun sets. Take my word for it: this is one restaurant you don’t want to miss in Ibiza. For a Beautiful Dinner: Sunset Ashram You can have any holiday you want there, from a week of high-end relaxation to a hedonistic dance-til-dawn weekend. In the afternoons, Tanit Beach Ibiza's daily programme of live music, shows and themed events gets underway with Sintillate on Thursdays, Funkybeach on Fridays and the Old's Cool party on Sundays, when Mariano Somoza plays favourite classics from the '70s and '80s. And if you’re in need of a special outfit for a night out, make a beeline for Annie’s Ibiza in the Old Town, where Kate and Lila shop for designer vintage on family holidays. “It’s easy to lose hours rifling through the precious vintage dresses, as well as new season pieces selected by founder Annie Doble,” says British Vogue’s commerce writer Alice Cary. “When she’s not travelling, Doble is on hand to help you choose between sparkly Area looks, vintage slips and her own line of corseted minidresses. Some nights it’s open until the small hours, which is perfect in a fashion emergency – like when you make the spontaneous decision to hit the club.” Getting there Some of the roads down to the beaches are pretty steep and things can become a bit hairy! I’d also recommend taking out full insurance for this reason. If you are wondering what to expect, the general rule is that the BPM goes up as the sun goes down. The evening starts with the vibe of an Ibizan chill-out bar, building up to an alfresco nightclub. Headlining the event is the 32-piece Urban Soul Orchestra (USO), known for their work alongside dance music greats like Groove Armada, Robert Miles and Nightmares On Wax. Ibiza island isn’t very big. You can drive across it in less than an hour. So, nowhere is out of reach.

Ibiza has made a name for itself as being the clubbing capital of Europe, but the island itself is making efforts to show that it has much more to offer than nightclubs and cheap shots, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Stay

Why it’s awesome: Es Amunts is one of the best places in Ibiza for nature lovers and people who love exploring the great outdoors. Covering some 37,000 acres (15,000 hectares) and stretching from east to west, the protected parkland includes dramatic coastal areas, forested areas, jagged peaks, fields and meadows, and lots of native wildlife. The unusual landscapes are home to a fascinating ecosystem. A top place for hiking, visitors can also experience rich traditions and culture too. Situated in the northernmost point of Ibiza is Portinatx, a secluded part of the island that is arguably the most beautiful. Three sandy beaches meet a shallow, turquoise sea, the perfect spot for families looking for a chilled out escape. Small sailing boats bob in the distance and the forested bay that wraps around this tranquil resort make it feel all the more peaceful. Classic Ibiza is an open-air celebration of White Isle-inspired house music, reinvented by a 32-piece orchestra, headline DJs and live vocalists. Touring some of the UK's most stunning stately homes, this isn’t just house music – this is stately house music. After a dip in the sea, retreat to the rustic restaurant and enjoy a great bottle of wine and some traditional Mediterranean cooking. The salt-crusted sea bass or paella gets my vote.

Let’s start with brunch. For scenery as drool-worthy as the food, El Chiringuito on Es Cavallet beach is a chic choice. Menu-wise, think wholesome smoothies and classic egg dishes to enjoy as waves lap the white sandy shore. Many don’t explore Ibiza’s gorgeous interior but if you really want to get away from it all, that’s the place to be. Roam in between the olive groves during the summer and see the almond trees blossom in early spring. If you’re keen to explore the quiet side of Ibiza, it is very helpful to hire a car. If you’re renting a car, I’d highly recommend hiring a 4 x 4, or at least something sturdy. It’s a far cry from the overt glamour of some of the more polished parts of Ibiza it is one of Ibiza’s best-kept secrets. With pretty, secluded sandy coves and sunsets you’ll remember for the rest of your life, Ibiza holidays can be a calm and relaxing retreat from hectic day to day life.

Do
