The book moves between Becky and Josh's points of view chapter by chapter, which works so well to show how their lives fit together, it reflects on their similarities and differences, the things they share and the things they don't. I'm not the best at writing I have dyslexia and my grammar and spelling suck but I do try and reread chapters and edit them so they make sense. Tommy liked this duet, it was both silly and goofy but held enough maturity for it to have an underlying meaning of having this false confidence in things you do. You’d be surprised how important these little acts can be for someone who’s struggling or having a bad day! So show your parents that you're a respectful and responsible person, and do the things you know they like and that make them proud of you.

The story is based around a family with two mums and two kids that were conceived using a sperm donor. I really wanted a relationship to form between these two characters, but when Becky kisses a very surprised Carli when over at Carli’s house with her judgemental mother downstairs, Carli politely, but firmly turns her down. To make a bigger impact, volunteer your time to a cause you care about, like a museum or homeless shelter, as a way of helping your community. I particularly liked the exploration of generational differences regarding LGBT+ acceptance and the recognition of the nuances of self-acceptance for LGBT+ people (i. This beautifully written middle grade book is perfect for children who are just starting secondary school, when friendships and relationships with parents can change and feel a bit more complicated. Through the ups and downs it all comes together to leave you with a full-heart and a lovely rounded ending (my biggest peeve is a poorly finished or rushed ending).

I’ve just finished reading “PROUD of Me,” a YA contemporary book by Sarah Hagger-Holt for LGBTQ month. It was positive but didn’t shy away from real conversations and concerns that parents, even (or especially) gay parents, have. Becky and Josh are almost twins, because they got the same - anonymous - donor and their birthdays are only eight days apart.

When Techno and Wilbur move away for college Tommy is left by himself with his father, someone who hadn't even had a conversation with Tommy for years. I thought Josh’s resentment at the lack of information available to him, and his frustration that his sibling doesn’t share his desire to know more were written so well, I really felt his struggle to connect with his identity, despite never having experience of anything even close. If you do your best and learn from your experiences, your parents have every reason to be proud of you. Phil had more important things to deal with rather than go to one of Tommy's stupid dance competitions, he had to deal with Technos fencing and boxing competitions or Wilburs marching band competitions and his band shows. My heart was in my mouth when he at thirteen goes on his literal journey of attempted discovery without anyone knowing.

Becky and Josh have two mums, and I liked that the book didn't put rose tinted glasses on their relationship, showing that there are still plenty of narrow minded opinions in society and that not everyone will be as accepting as they should be. The story was ABOUT the young people and how they cope through issues and trials of being a young person.I thought it was a lovely read, although I did want to wrap both of them into a big warm hug throughout. This will be a rather short review (for me) because it’s a contemporary book that’s written for children so there aren’t lots of things to dissect. This book is really well-written and engaging and I don’t think I’ve read a book that covers LGBTQ+ in this way before.

We’re shy to toot our own horn, and we’re not that keen on getting extra attention for our successes. Told through their alternating perspectives, Proud of Me explores acceptance and self-acceptance in the Queer community. Josh’s hunt for the donor dad added a background sense of urgency to the story, too, as he delves into online forums, lies about his age, and plans to meet a stranger online. When stressed, Tubbo would shut down and put on a mask of blankness while Tommy used jokes and laughter to cover how much hurt he was feeling. With subjects such as same-sex parenting to children conceived by fertility treatments, it's a story that will both educates you on a subject matter I've rarely seen in YA novels never mind Middle Grade of which age range, 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑒 is aimed at.It's good to practice seeing our own strengths, even simple ones like finishing a tough assignment or cooking a good meal. Tommy often stayed in his room only to leave to go to school then dance and then he would hang out at Tubbos. When you make a mistake or fail a test, take time to reflect on what went wrong and try to learn from the experience. An accessible child-centred story about self-acceptance and the importance of opening up to those closest to you. If you’re still living with your parents and siblings, focus on respecting each other’s boundaries and helping the others out when they need it.
